On a Fabricated State Scandal
Well, for those who doesn’t have any idea on who Randall L. Tobias is I have a couple of things to say. First of all he is (was actually) the first United States Director of Foreign Assistance responsible for overseeing all foreign assistance activities of the U.S. Government. He was also responsible for carrying over all U.S. international HIV/AIDS assistance and coordinating the efforts of the various agencies and departments of the United States Government delivering aid.
Several years ago, as a former Eli Lilly CEO who made a fortune over Prozac, there was (some) controversy about whether he deserved the position or not. But the things I’m going to mention here is not even close to that subject or such. Not going to write about corporate governance or ethical compliance at Eli Lilly during his time. Our incident here is that, Randall Tobias has announced his resignation (has been forced to resign actually) as the head of those two aid programs a few days ago after his name appeared in an investigation into an escort service engaged in prostitution.
Although ABC reported on its website later that day that Tobias confirmed he had called the “Pamela Martin and Associates” (Jeane Palfrey’s call girl business) escort service to have women come to his condo and give him only massages, this is not neither our case nor we’ll discuss the moral points behind it. If only if he had, in the end, he didn’t have sex with Angelina Jolie with whom he had a luncheon at the State Department with and Undersecretary of State Karen Hughes 2 days before his resignation. That I would call it a scandal and it would create a major, international unrest resulting in Tobias’s resignation. (And probably Mrs. Pitt’s divorce)
All the kidding aside, the thing I’m trying to point out is the hypocrisy of the government’s progression with utmost Christian conservatism. In the light of this event, according to their Neo-Con’s handbook, it is an impeachable motive to pay for sex but its O.K. to invade a country and lay hands on its natural resources without any rational argument. That may sound a little bit populist to you, but this actually was the first thing among many that popped into my mind.
I guess that Jeane Palfrey, a.k.a. the D.C. Madam, and Tobias are scapegoats for “someone who was trying to get out” of something. As the media milks this story for all its got, (Americans love these kind of –reality- news, remember Clinton) we might never be able to learn who are on D.C. Madam’s list (who wants to break free) or even if there is a list like that. They, the state administrators, generate any kind of crisis according to their wills, and direct it for the sake of their hidden agenda. What we see here is a sex scandal, and we blame the government for its hypocrisy on taking sides and acting unfairly but God knows what’s behind this hollow incident. Pardon me for watching a lot of classic political Hollywood thrillers, but I can’t take myself from thinking that there is the possibility of a plot about a deeper circumstance here.
I don’t know, but “insincerity” I think, is the most appropriate word not only to sum up U.S. Governments’ international relations (also bilateral relations with my home country over evident issues) but also to sum up its regulations against its own people, even its top state officers. They make the laws (both domestic and international) yet they see themselves above them. We’ll just wait and see what’s going to happen next…
